Solo sex - masturbation for boys

Masturbation is good for you

You think you're the only one who's ever masturbated into a condom before? Or rummaged through the fridge or bathroom cabinet to find some suitable form of what (maybe you didn't know) is called lubrication to get you that indulgent feeling?

People start to masturbate at a variety of ages and carry on throughout their adult lives. Boys usually start between the ages of 12 and 14, but some may start at an earlier or later age. Girls usually start a bit later - even though they'll (usually) be more physically mature earlier than boys.

As hormone levels increase in your body things start to change (see puberty) and you begin to see the world through slightly different eyes. From an early age you may find pleasure in holding on to your penis and eventually this will most likely lead to masturbation and, though perhaps not at first, ejaculation.

This is a biological function. If you were having sex with a woman, for example, that point would be the moment when you would be making her pregnant, without contraception or if that's what you wanted. This is all part of the rich, natural sexual development of a teenage boy.

Fantasies

As you masturbate, you may have varying thoughts and feelings going through your mind. This is all good and well. In fact, it can be very creative and it helps you work out more about what you want in terms of sex - and how perhaps you want it. Be reassured and enjoy your fantasies. It's not a bad, unnatural thing to do - however weird and wonderful they may seem to you.

Why masturbate?

First of all, it can be a great stress reliever. Also, it will enhance your self-confidence, help you understand your sexual feelings and pleasures and build your sexual confidence as a young boy changing into a man. It feels great, does no harm - and actually a lot of good - and it's free! Look at it as a journey of self-discovery and exploration.

How often?

Quite a lot. Masturbating two, three or more times a day is pretty common. Well, if the body's willing.

What people used to say

Hair will grow on the palms of your hands. You'll go blind. You'll be less of a man. You'll feel tired. (No, that's just because your body's very busy growing.) Sex, in any case, is dirty. All, of course, total rubbish.

Why they said it

Perhaps it's because sex is part of the secret or rather private sphere of life that parents and some adults find difficult to talk about and explain. Or perhaps the idea of enjoying oneself can be too much for some people. Perhaps it's because of the religious beliefs held by some people. (Historically, it was actually a quack in the 18 th Century who wanted to make a few quid from selling 'anti-masturbatory' products.) Never mind: you enjoy.
